Foodies vs Yelp: what people cooked against where to eat.

Two apps that do not compete

People compare Foodies and Yelp because both have the word “food” near them and both know where you are. They answer different questions. Yelp answers “where should I eat”, with business listings, star ratings, written reviews, photographs of the meal and a way to book. Foodies answers “what are people cooking and eating”, with posts from people you follow and from people near you, and it has no listings, no ratings, no reviews and no bookings at all. If you pick the wrong one for your question, you will be disappointed for reasons that are nobody's fault.

What Yelp is for

Yelp is a directory with a social layer. Its job is to hold a listing for nearly every local business, attach ratings and reviews from people who went, and let you filter, map and book. For “a Thai place open now that takes a group of six”, it is the right tool and Foodies is not even a candidate. Its App Store rating on the US storefront on 6 September 2026 was 4.54 from about 2.0 million ratings, which reflects fifteen years of doing that job at scale.

The trade is the one every review platform makes: the content is written about places, for strangers, and the incentives around scores shape what gets written. That is fine for choosing a restaurant. It is a poor place to keep a record of your own cooking or to follow a pastry chef's week.

What Foodies is for

Foodies is a network of people and their posts. You post photographs or a video of what you cooked or ate, with a caption. You follow people, and their posts arrive in a chronological Following feed. For You ranks from what you engage with. Nearby shows posts from people around you, ordered by proximity and recency, with post coordinates snapped to roughly a kilometre before storage.

There is nothing to score and nobody is being reviewed. A post about a meal in a restaurant is a post about the meal, from the person who ate it, to the people who follow them, and it lives next to that person's home cooking. Around the feeds sit live cook-alongs, end-to-end encrypted messages, named collections for saving and a Food DNA summary on every profile. There is no advertising in the feed.

The one place-shaped feature in Foodies

It is worth being exact, because this is where people expect a Yelp inside Foodies and find something else. Members can add the venues they eat at, and those appear on a map you can browse, marked as somewhere you want to try or somewhere you have been. Nothing is ingested from a licensed dataset, nothing is rated, there are no ranked lists and no venue exists until a member adds it. It is a personal record shared with the people who follow you, and it makes no claim about whether anybody else should go.

• “Where should we eat tonight?” Yelp, or another directory. Not Foodies.
• “What is this restaurant like?” Yelp. Foodies has no page for it.
• “What are people around me cooking this week?” Foodies, the Nearby feed.
• “Where do I put the photograph of what I made?” Foodies. Yelp has nowhere for it.
• “I want to follow this cook.” Foodies.
• “I want to book.” Yelp, or the restaurant. Foodies has no connection to any booking system.

Many people will keep both. They are not substitutes, and the page on seeing what people are eating near you explains why Foodies chose not to become the other thing.
