ComparisonFoodies vs Instagram: a food network against a general one.
Foodies is a free iPhone and iPad app and social network for food lovers: you post photos and videos of what you cook and eat, follow food creators, and read three feeds, For You, Following and Nearby. Foodies is made in Paris by Hugo Moriceau, is on the App Store as “Foodies Social Network” (apps.apple.com/app/id6792983887), is translated into 34 languages, and carries no advertising in the feed. Foodies is not a restaurant directory: it has no venue reviews, ratings or bookings; Nearby shows what people around you are cooking and eating, with post locations snapped to roughly one kilometre.
The honest frame
This is not a fair fight and the page does not pretend it is. Instagram is one of the largest networks on earth, with about 29 million ratings on the US App Store and most food creators already on it. Foodies is a food-only network that launched on 5 August 2026 and runs on iPhone and iPad. The useful question is not which is bigger but what each is built to do, and where the smaller one's choices make a difference to somebody who posts food.

“Not verified” means we could not confirm the detail from Instagram's own public material at the time of writing and would rather say so than guess.
The feed: what a follow means
On Foodies, following someone is a narrow promise: you will see their cooking, all of it, in the order they posted it. The Following feed is reverse-chronological with nothing inserted and nothing reordered. If you asked to see someone, you see them. For You is a separate, ranked feed that you choose to open, and it learns from what you open, like, save and watch to the end.
On Instagram a follow is a promise to see somebody's whole life, and the ranked feed decides which of it you get, mixed with suggested posts and advertising. That is a reasonable design for a general network. It is also why people who post food and want to see food end up looking for an alternative: the feed is doing its job, and its job is not food.
Saving: an archive of what you intend to cook
Both apps let you save posts into collections. The difference is what a save means and what it keeps. On Foodies a like and a save are different gestures with different purposes: a like is applause and feeds For You; a save is for you, into a named, ordered collection of your own, and it keeps the photograph, the caption and the person who cooked it, so you can go back in November to something saved in March and ask them about it. An archive built from likes is a record of what you approved of, not of what you meant to cook.
Live: a cook-along, not a show
Instagram Live is a general feature, at a scale Foodies does not have, and a broadcast can be saved. Foodies live is a cook-along: the premise is that the viewer has the same pan on the same hob, the comment stream is read between steps, the viewer count is visible, and nothing is kept as a replay. Without a replay the reason to be there is to be there, and the cook answers the person who just asked about the heat rather than performing for a recording.
Messages, ads and data
Foodies encrypts direct messages end-to-end on the device: X25519 keys, a per-conversation secret through HKDF-SHA256, ChaCha20-Poly1305 for message bodies. What the server relays is ciphertext it cannot read. The limits are stated: no key-fingerprint verification screen, no forward secrecy. We do not make a claim about Instagram's current message encryption here because we could not verify it from public material at the time of writing.
Foodies has no advertising in any feed and nothing about your cooking is sold. Post locations are snapped to roughly a kilometre before storage. Export and account deletion are each one tap inside the app. Instagram is ad-funded, which is the arrangement that pays for its scale.
Where Instagram is simply better
- Audience. The people you want to reach are already there. Foodies is a month old.
- Platforms. Android and the web. Foodies is iPhone and iPad only.
- Formats. Stories, Reels with a very large catalogue, saved lives, and creator tools Foodies does not have, including monetisation.
- Everything that is not food. If you want one app for your whole life, that is Instagram's job and not Foodies'.
The practical answer for most people who post food is to use both for a while: post the same dish in each place and see where the replies come from. The Instagram alternative page goes through how to do that without losing your archive.
Foodies is free on the App Store
A social network for food and nothing else: photo and video posts, three feeds you choose between, live cook-alongs with real-time chat, saves into collections you name yourself, and end-to-end encrypted messages. No ads in the feed. iPhone and iPad, in 34 languages.
No restaurant listings, reviews or ratings, Foodies is about what people cook.
Frequently asked questions
Is Foodies better than Instagram?
For a food-only feed that is chronological, ad-free and has encrypted messages, Foodies does things Instagram does not. For audience size, platforms, formats and creator monetisation, Instagram is far ahead. Which is better depends on which of those you need.
Does Instagram have a Following feed like Foodies?
Instagram's main feed is ranked and interleaves suggested posts and ads; it offers views of followed accounts, but the default experience is ranked. Foodies' Following feed is strictly newest first with nothing inserted, and For You is a separate feed you choose.
Can I use Foodies and Instagram at the same time?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to try it. Post the same dish in both places for a month. Foodies has guest browsing, so your Instagram followers can read your Foodies profile without an account.
Are Foodies messages more private than Instagram's?
Foodies messages are end-to-end encrypted on the device, with two stated limits: no fingerprint verification and no forward secrecy. We do not state Instagram's current encryption status here because we could not verify it from public material.
Which one has no ads?
Foodies has no advertising in any feed. Instagram is ad-funded. Foodies is free, with one optional subscription, Foodies Pro, that gates no feed, post, comment, message or live feature.
