Where the two overlap, and where they do not

Beli and Foodies are both social apps about food built by small teams, both are free on the App Store, and both use friends as the signal. That is where the overlap ends. Beli is about restaurants: you rank the places you have eaten against each other, keep lists, see where friends are eating, and get recommendations. Foodies is about dishes: you post what you cooked or ate, follow people, and read feeds. One produces a ranked list of places; the other produces a stream of plates.

We could not verify several Beli details from public material, its own site says only that it helps you “track and share your favorite restaurants with your friends” on iOS and Android, so the table marks them “not verified” rather than guessing.

What Beli is for

Beli's premise is that a ranked list is more honest than a star rating. Instead of scoring a restaurant out of five, you compare it with places you have already been, and the app builds an ordered list from those comparisons. Lists and maps hold what you want to try and where you have been; friends' rankings feed recommendations. It is a well-liked way to keep a record of eating out and to pick a place from the judgement of people you trust. Its App Store rating, 4.85 from about 16,900 ratings on the US storefront in September 2026, says people who use it for that are happy.

What it is not built for, as far as its public description goes, is home cooking: there is no obvious place in a restaurant-ranking app for the plate you made on a Tuesday.

What Foodies is for

Foodies has no rankings, no lists of the best anything and no scores, by design. A post is what you cooked or ate, with a caption that is usually the recipe. Following someone puts their posts into a chronological Following feed; For You ranks posts from what you open, like, save and watch to the end; Nearby shows posts from people around you with coordinates snapped to roughly a kilometre. A save goes into a named collection of your own and keeps the photograph, the caption and the cook.

Around that sit live cook-along broadcasts with a real-time comment stream and viewer count, end-to-end encrypted direct messages, a Food DNA summary on every profile, guest browsing without an account, and no advertising in the feed. Members can add the venues they eat at to a map marked “want to try” or “been”, with nothing scored and nothing ranked.

The same meal in each app

Say you ate well at a small place last night. In Beli you rank it against the last few places you ate, it slots into your list, and a friend deciding where to go on Friday benefits from that judgement. In Foodies you post the dish, with what it was and why it was good, and the people who follow you see the plate; a friend might save it into a collection called “Things to try in Lisbon”. Beli records a verdict about the place. Foodies records the dish and the person who ate it. Neither record can be reconstructed from the other, which is why people who care about both tend to keep both apps.

• You cook and want somewhere to post it and follow other cooks: Foodies.
• You want to know what people near you are cooking and eating this week: Foodies, the Nearby feed.
• You want to choose a restaurant for Friday: Beli, or a directory. Foodies has nothing to score and will not help.
• You are on Android: Beli. Foodies is iPhone and iPad only.
• You want no ads in the feed and encrypted messages: Foodies has both; Beli's position on each is not verified here.
